Montessori Founders Share Insights on Leadership and Growth

In a recent video conversation, Inside the Montessori Journey: Founder to Founder, two Montessori school founders explored the challenges and rewards of starting and sustaining a school. The discussion offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at the decisions, values, and leadership practices that shape the future of Montessori education.

Waterfront Academy’s founder and president, Melissa Rohan, noted that the exchange reflects many of the same themes she has encountered in building and leading Waterfront Academy: a commitment to authentic Montessori practice and the central role of community culture.

Taking the Leap

The conversation began with the pivotal moment when Montessori moved from an idea to a reality. Both founders described the uncertainty and courage required to start a school from the ground up.

For many leaders, including Rohan, that leap of faith is the defining moment that sets the tone for the school’s future.

Culture Over Curriculum

Perhaps the most striking insight was the emphasis on culture. The founders agreed that while curriculum and facilities are essential, the invisible work of building trust, relationships, and shared values among staff is what ultimately determines success.

An Ongoing Journey

The conversation closed with a reminder that the founder’s journey does not end once a school is established. Montessori leadership requires constant reflection, renewal, and recommitment to the values that inspired the school’s creation in the first place.
