Celebrating the Easter Season as a Catholic Montessori Family

Children in colorful outfits and bunny ears smile with baskets of Easter eggs. Vibrant eggs scattered on carpet. Joyful indoor scene.

Easter is more than just a single day of celebration—it is a season of joy, renewal, and deep reflection in the Catholic faith. The liturgical season of Easter lasts for 50 days, from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, providing a beautiful opportunity for Catholic Montessori families to extend their celebrations and deepen their spiritual journey.

Through prayer, reflection, and Montessori-inspired activities, families can create meaningful experiences that nurture both faith and learning. Here are some ways to bring the Easter season to life in your home.

1. Living the Joy of the Resurrection

The Easter season is a time of great rejoicing! In the Montessori approach, we encourage hands-on learning and meaningful repetition, which can help children internalize the joy of Christ’s resurrection.

  • Create a Resurrection Garden – Plant flowers, grass, or small plants in a dish to symbolize new life. Place a small rock and an empty tomb to remind children of the Easter story.

  • Sing Alleluia Together – The word "Alleluia" is joyfully reintroduced after being omitted during Lent. Sing Easter hymns as a family to celebrate this joyful return.

  • Light a Paschal Candle – Place a special candle in your prayer space and light it daily during prayer time to represent Christ’s light in the world.

2. Deepening Faith Through Prayer and Reflection

A Catholic Montessori home is rich in prayer and contemplation. During the Easter season, you can incorporate prayers and reflections that emphasize the themes of hope, renewal, and love.

  • Read Bible Stories About the Resurrection – Use a children’s Bible to read passages about Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances. Encourage children to retell the stories using figures or drawings.

  • Celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday – The second Sunday of Easter is dedicated to God’s mercy. Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet together as a family.

  • Create a Prayer Table with Liturgical Colors – Use white and gold cloths to reflect the liturgical season. Change it to red as Pentecost approaches.

3. Montessori-Inspired Easter Activities

Children learn best through hands-on experiences, and the Easter season provides many opportunities for meaningful Montessori activities.

  • Sensory Play with an "Alleluia Box" – Fill a small box with symbols of joy, such as flowers, a small cross, or pictures of Jesus. Let children explore the items and discuss their significance.

  • Resurrection-Themed Practical Life Activities – Encourage children to bake Easter bread, arrange flowers for the prayer table, or pour water into a baptismal font as a reminder of new life in Christ.

  • Pentecost Wind Experiment – As Pentecost approaches, explore the concept of the Holy Spirit through a Montessori-style wind experiment using candles, fans, or kites to demonstrate the power of an unseen force.

4. Embracing the Full Easter Season

Easter does not end after one day! Keep the joy alive by celebrating each part of the season:

  • Ascension Thursday – Take time to reflect on Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Go outside and watch the clouds or release a balloon as a symbol of His return to the Father.

  • Pentecost Sunday – Celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit with red clothing, a special meal, or by creating a "flames of the Spirit" craft using tissue paper.

The Easter season is a time of joy, renewal, and spiritual growth. As Catholic Montessori families, we can enrich this season with meaningful prayer, reflection, and hands-on activities that allow children to experience the beauty of their faith in a tangible way.

By extending the celebration beyond Easter Sunday and fully embracing the 50-day season, we help children develop a deeper connection to their Catholic faith, making it a lived experience rather than just a tradition.
