Celebrating Holy Guardian Angels in a Montessori Way

Children pray with flowers around a table with candles, surrounded by angelic figures. A cat sits nearby, and bookshelves line the room.

On October 2nd, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, a reminder that each of us is accompanied, guided, and protected by a heavenly friend. In a Montessori environment, we honor this feast in a way that respects the child’s natural sense of wonder, independence, and reverence. Here are some meaningful ways to celebrate the Holy Guardian Angels with children the Montessori way:

1. Prayerful Silence and Contemplation

Montessori classrooms often embrace the practice of silence exercises, helping children cultivate inner peace and awareness of God’s presence. On this feast day, begin with a moment of silence, inviting children to imagine their guardian angel nearby. Then pray together the Guardian Angel Prayer:

“Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”

This short prayer can become part of the children’s daily routine, grounding them in a sense of divine care.

2. Artistic Expression

Provide open-ended art materials (watercolors, pastels, colored pencils) and invite children to create their own interpretation of what a guardian angel might look like. Emphasize that angels are spiritual beings, so their art does not have to “look realistic” — it’s about expressing the invisible reality through color and imagination.

For younger children, you could trace a child’s silhouette on large paper and let them add “angel wings” to symbolize God’s protection.

3. Scripture Work with the Atrium Spirit

Offer a short passage for older children to copy into their scripture journals or copywork books:

  • “For he commands his angels with regard to you, to guard you wherever you go.” (Psalm 91:11)

Children can illustrate the verse or illuminate it with decorative borders, much like a medieval manuscript.

4. Angel-Themed Practical Life Activities

Montessori practical life activities can take on a spiritual dimension:

  • Care of Environment: Have children arrange a small prayer table with an image or statue of an angel, a candle, and flowers.

  • Fine Motor Work: Angel-shaped cookie cutters with clay or playdough invite quiet concentration.

  • Grace and Courtesy: Role play ways we can “be like angels” to one another—helping, guiding, and protecting friends.

5. Acts of Kindness as “Being an Angel”

Invite the children to think of one way they can be someone’s “guardian angel” that day. Perhaps they can help a classmate tie shoes, share materials, or offer a kind word. At the end of the day, gather together and share stories of when they noticed others “being an angel.”

In the Montessori way, we honor the child’s capacity for awe and respect their spiritual hunger for God. Celebrating the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels reminds children that they are never alone — God’s love is always present through their angelic companion.
