Thursday night Waterfront Academy celebrated its opening with Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells and St. Vincent de Paul’s pastor, Father Andrew Royals. The event started off with a ribbon cutting to commemorate the opening of the new classrooms with Father Royals, Councilmember Wells, School Board Member Patrick Mara, and Melissa Rohan, President of the Board and founder of Waterfront Academy. Father Royals blessed the school and noted the significance of the day as the feast day of The Holy Guardian Angels as most appropriate to watch over Waterfront Academy and the children leaning within our care. Royals also said, “not unlike Dr. Maria Montessori herself, Waterfront Academy is inspiring for its deep roots in faith.” Councilmember Wells also congratulated Mrs. Rohan for creating the first school of its kind in the nation and said, “Waterfront Academy is going to be here a long time for the children of Southwest and DC.” Waterfront Academy is the only school in the United States that offers its students the unique opportunity to receive an individualized academic and spiritual education, simultaneously in Spanish and in English. We are a very diverse school and will continue to be as we grow our inaugural year. Not only is Waterfront Academy currently twenty percent Black, sixty percent Hispanic, and twenty percent Caucasian (non-Hispanic), but our students and staff represent all four quadrants of DC. We are currently recognized by the National Association of Private Catholic and Independent Schools (NAPCIS), DC Council for American Private Education (DC CAPE), and the Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). Waterfront Academy is a dual immersion (Spanish and English) faith-based Montessori school with emphasis on charity and stewardship in the Catholic tradition.
